SpaceX returned in emphatic fashion over the weekend , as it successfully launched and land a skyrocket for the first time in five   month .

The Falcon 9 rocket , carrying 10 satellite for communicating company Iridium , plagiarise off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 12.54pm EST ( 5.54pm GMT ) on Saturday . A few minute after launch , the first stage of the rocket flew back to the dry land , and performed a powered landing place on a floating hoy call Just Read The Instructions .

This was SpaceX ’s first try at a launching since September , when one of its   rockets experience a catastrophiclaunch pad of paper failureand exploded . The change of mind has been signally ready follow an investigating into the unsuccessful person , and SpaceX can now start work on through its stockpile of order .

SpaceX has recover from failure before , most notably in 2015 , when one of its rocketsexploded in Juneon its way to the International Space Station ( ISS ) with a Dragon cargo spacecraft on display board . That time , SpaceX did not pilot again till December – so the turnaround on this occasion has been even straightaway .

And landing one of its skyrocket again will be a monumental boon to SpaceX , who are skip to massively reduce the price of launching by reusing rockets . They are yet to recycle one of their landed rockets yet – of which there are now seven   – having in the beginning planned to do so in 2016.That launch , for Luxembourg orbiter producer SES , is now likely to take post this year .

As for this weekend ’s launch , this was the first of several that have been range by Iridium to replace its maturate fleet of communications satellites . The company is celebrated for being the first to offer orbicular satellite phone coverage , but now its satellite are used for a much wider range of purposes .

They are also notable for being the source of Iridium “ flares ” , flashes in the sky as sunshine reflects off the satellites . But Iridium ’s CEO , Matt Desch , toldBBC Newsthat those would cease to come about once the quondam satellite had all been taken out of service in the next few years . If you ’ve never find out an Iridium flare pass , we ’d extremely recommend doing so . Details on how to see them can be foundhere .

This was SpaceX ’s first successful trajectory since the launch of the JCSAT-16 satellite on August 14 , 2016 . Their next launching is scheduled for February 8 , when they will found a Dragon cargo mission to the ISS . This twelvemonth , the party is also planning to perform an remote-controlled test of its crewed Dragon 2 ballistic capsule , and hopefully set in motion the Falcon Heavy – which will be the world ’s most powerful rocket in mental process .
