In her bookA Dress for Diana, Elizabeth Emanuel wrote that a client left a mascara stain on a custom-made gown, prompting the Emanuels to use the materials for the blouse. “When she saw our blouse on the rack she fell in love with it, asked who had made it and was directed to us,” she wrote, per the auction company.

Emanuel sold the piece, which was seen in the February 1981 issue ofVogue,from her archive in 2010, and it previously appeared on display at Kensington Palace for an exhibition from 2017 to 2019.
