Thankfully, Mayer, 41, had plenty of time before the afterparties to fix his dilemma, because as he explained on an Instagram Live, “there’s something in between the show and the afterparty, and it’s called waiting around doing nothing.”

“You might be aware that I’ve got my hair cut in between — since I last saw you in between the Grammys and now,” Mayer told his fans during the Instagram Live. “I got my hair cut because I looked back at a picture from the Grammys and I said, ‘That won’t do. I need another haircut.’ Shout out to my barber Nick [Flores of Sally Hershberger Salon], who came to my house.”

Prior to presenting, Mayer joined longtime palAlicia Keyson stage to discuss his own song of the year award for “Daughters” back in 2004 — and why he gave half to Keys.

“I wanted to share with you a little story. I have been super blessed to win 15 Grammys. Pretty cool, pretty cool,” Keys explained. “In 2004 I dreamed about winning song of the year for ‘If I Ain’t Got You.’ So, when my hero, Stevie Wonder, opened up that card and started to read in braille, I just knew he was going to feel my name.”

Instead, the award went to Mayer.

“But don’t worry, it’s okay! This story has a really happy ending,” Keys said, holding half a Grammy aloft. “Because John said, ‘I agree, Alicia, this should have been yours’ and he literally broke the Grammy and wrote ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ with my name on it and gave it to me.”

Mayer then strolled onstage with the other half of the gramophone.

“This has got to be the coolest joint custody agreement in showbiz history,” Mayer joked.

Keys said, “We’re putting it back together — it belongs back together.” “Just for one night only,” Mayer added.
