As I drive to Universal recently , I had many inquiry aboutHow to Train Your Dragon . The film , which just publish its latest trailer , isa remaking of one of my favorite — and probably among the best — revivify films in late storage . A triumphant , emotional , exciting masterpiece . It ’s essentially perfect . So , to remake it makes you wonder “ Why do we need this ? ” Was it happening just for the money ? Would fan actually get something out of it ? ”
Those were among the questions I had as writer - theater director Dean DeBlois presented three full scenes , and the unexampled poke , to a mathematical group of wardrobe on January 30 . And , over the class of the eve , not only did I begin to come around to the need for the plastic film , I got answers to all my questions . Questions like : what advantages does a alive - natural action remake have over animation ? Why did n’t they modify the look of the firedrake Toothless ? Would composer John Powell be redoing his iconic score ? And what , if anything , was the inter-group communication to a fullHow to Train Your Dragonland open atUniversal ’s epical Universe theme parkmere workweek before the moving-picture show ? Read answers to those and more below .
To startle , DeBlois tell that he was n’t the biggest fan of hot - action remakes in general . He always felt like if you were going to make over an animated movie in lively - action there had to be a really good reason for it . In the case ofHow to Train Your Dragon , the reason he latched onto was being able to plunk into things they were n’t able-bodied to when they made the first motion picture , like learn more about character ( include Astrid ) who were a little short - change in the first moving-picture show . Explore more of the mythology of the Viking macrocosm . All that kind of stuff . He basically said he began to think of the live - natural action remake as the interlingual rendition of the movie they would ’ve made in 2010 if they had more time and money to fill in it .

We set off to answer some of your burning questions about How to Train Your Dragon.Image: Universal
We saw that display in the first of three scene designate , which was the first prison term all the young Vikings — Hiccup ( Mason Thames ) , Astrid ( Nico Parker ) , Fishlegs ( Julian Dennison ) , and the rest — are force into a showdown with the dragon . The vista had sight of wit but really focus more on Astrid ’s clear high quality over the rest of her friends and how that impacts who she is as a soul . The scene sure as shooting reminded us of the original movie , but had more meat on the bone .
DeBlois then explained that while most of the movie was at least a little unlike from the original , other scenes would not be different at all . For example , the second view they show was the first clock time Hiccup and Toothless fly together , one of the film ’s most memorable moments , and the fit is almost shot for guesswork from the animated film . There are “ a couple of instant where we feel like we should almost beat shot for shot with the exalt film because these are iconic picture that fans will make out . And we wanted to honor them in live action as best we could , ” DeBlois said . And as the tantrum play , complete with that iconic music , all those emotion came back again .
Watching that aspect also mean straight off taking on two of my large electrocution interrogative sentence . First was the design of not just Toothless , but all the dragons who look very similar to their animated counterparts . “ The alone challenge in designing them for live action [ was ] we wanted to check that we did n’t sacrifice those trademark silhouettes and personalities and everything from the animated movie , ” DeBlois said . “ plainly we wanted to set up aside anything that was too anthropomorphous because we ’re really attempt to ramp up the theme of credible dragons on covert . But finding how much to retain versus how much to reinvent was a bit of an develop appendage . ”

DeBlois said the team pull tidy sum of breathing in from the words of iconic particular effects artist John Dykstra . He told the team to “ imagine the enliven movie came after the hot - action at law pic , ” according to DeBlois . “ So everything in terms of tartar design that you ’ve simplified and caricature and highlighted add up from an actual animal that was film with real cameras and moved around as a creature of this natural world , ” he said .
“ So , exploit backward , we were able to retain what we think might have been simplified in an animated design , but give it a little bit more of a robust sort of skeleton , musculature , shell , and details . But from afar , I still sense like that ’s the same creature . ”
Which is a process that , in a way , also applies to the pic ’s magical score by composer John Powell . “ John Powell ’s in the midriff of writing his euphony , which is , again , the same challenge , ” DeBlois said . “ How do you keep what hoi polloi loved about it , but also bring a small more mundanity , paint with different brushes , and freshen it for hopefully a new generation of people ? ”

The third scene bring all that together as we determine another iconic moment from the original film , when Hiccup is supposed to murder a dragon in front of everyone ( including his Father-God , Stoic , played by Gerard Butler ) and instead reveals his pacifism toward dragons . The scene , again , finger very much like the animated film but everything was just a little more elaborate and detailed . Like , for example , the dragon he ’s got to defeat has fire over its entire body . It ’s excessive and cool at the same time .
So I ’d check why DeBlois was making this film , what live - activity admit them to do , why the dragons look so standardised , and about the score . For my last question , I had to draw exit the director later on . I postulate himabout the coming melodic theme parkand if the team ever collaborate , considering both were bringing this domain to aliveness , in lively action , at the same time . “ They did a presentation for us about a class ago , ” he said . “ And they essentially said , ‘ This is what we ’re building . It ’s based onHow to Train Your Dragon 2 , the animated moving-picture show . ’ So it ’s about the world as firedrake have already moved in . They ’ve already made all sorts of accommodation for them . And that it ’s skewed a bit younger . So it was presenting , ‘ We know you write and make the story , and this is our spin on it . ’ And I got the good sense like I was n’t supposed to give notes . [ Laughs ] They were underway , they were building it . They had their own deadlines . So I ’m really rummy to see it . It looks nerveless . ”
And the fact they are opening so tight to each other is , plainly , just a nice coincidence . “ I like the timing of it . At one detail , we were going to derive out on the same day that it opened . I thought that was a cool musical theme , ” he said . “ I am curious to see it and go back to the oldLilo & StitchandMulanstomping reason . But I do n’t love much more than what people station on YouTube . ”

Which , thankfully , is no longer the case with the live - actionHow to Train Your Dragon . You now know importantly more . And , as DeBlois said at the conclusion of the presentation , while he ’s convinced they are go to make a great , worthwhile moving picture and he hopes everyone agrees , the bad case scenario is “ There ’s always the animate motion picture . ” The pic opens June 13 .
