When writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo read over DC Comics ’ Batman last autumn , they quickly went to work craft one of the most phenomenally creepy Bat - narration in late storage .
And starting next hebdomad , the duo kick off Night of the Owls , a story that cross across the Batman Word . In this arc , Gotham City is besieged by a mysterious cabal experience as the Court of Owls and the Talons , their nigh indestructible bravo . io9 verbalize to Capullo about ramp up a Gotham where Batman ’s get firedog - piled by martial artist of his bore .
When you came aboard Batman , how did you devise your take on the Dark Knight ?

As far as amusing influences go , I regain myself drawing a portion from Frank Miller ’s The Dark Knight Returns . To me , it ’s all about the shape and silhouette . That ’s something I play around with a lot on Spawn . I really enjoyed the shot in Dark Knight Returns when Batman has a flat - faced Bat - helmet when he ’s wired up to fight Superman — that apparently influenced the way I draw Batman ’s cowl .
I wanted him imposing , monolithic , angular , and as scarey as possible . If he rap into you , he might circumstantially fracture your shoulder . I came at him like an emotion — how should Batman make me feel ?
And what sort of design pool stick went intothe talon , the assassins for the sinister Court of Owls ?

Scott number to me with his imaginativeness . It was almost like Snake oculus from G.I. Joe : very slick , all blades . What he did n’t want wasOwlman . As presently as he tell the word “ assassin ” to me , an public executioner ’s hood protrude into mind . We then hash out adding the goggles and make his silhouette similar to Batman ’s . The sweeping seam are also reminiscent of a Great horn Owl , and we have him plenty of knives . Not too many , as we did n’t desire to go too Nineties .
Were there any succession for Night of the Owls that were you particularly psyched to exemplify ?
The thrill for me is see the creative person in the other account book [ Night of the Owls is crossing over with ] handle my Talon designs . Without giving a spoiler , I had to trace several of these Talons on the fly . I had to tie a whole bunch of these Guy . It was pretty task intensive , illustrating , say , nine assassin each with different costumes and elaborate implements of war on one page moderately quickly .

This story line really pick up Batman on the ropes . He does n’t even have fourth dimension to trim because he ’s too busy getting the shit kicked out of him . People have been require me , “ When is Batman going to give these guys what ’s coming to them ? ” Issue # 8 is just the warm - up . return # 9 is when the ass - kick really go full - tilt , and Issue # 10 is when things get even crazier . It ’s snuff it to be beautiful .
Both your work on Batman and Spawn feature plenty of gritty urban landscapes . What ’s the prayer of get out this background ?
To be honest , I freaking hate drawing cities . It just so happens that the books that I do happen to feature them ! The great affair about Gotham though is its smelly computer architecture . It ’s not like Spider - Man where you model the buildings after Manhattan . In Gotham , some of it ’s art deco , and you may put all that you learn about computer architecture and thresh it in a liquidizer .

Might we see your own spin on Batman ’s more familiar rogues in future fib ?
