If we made a Top Gear for widget , would you watch it ? In two weeks , you ’ll have your prospect .
Nearly ten age ago , when I first fly the coop Gizmodo , gadgets were as niche of a subject for news and argumentation as could be . It was such an insider ’s theme , in fact , that all it took for me to first get the gig was to send our publishing house an instant content and require him if he was hiring . ( You should try that now ; he ’d love that . Be sure to wait until late at night . )
Today Gizmodo and its many apparitional offshoots , from innovative publications like The Verge to M of enthusiast blogs all over the web , are n’t any sorting of solitary backwater when it comes to media . We ’re all proper in the midsection of a humankind where nearly everyone has a little computer in their pocket , where the recess conversation about social etiquette are the ones that do n’t necessitate gadget protocol .

But there ’s one expanse of spiritualist that gadgets have n’t yet conquered from the inside out : mainstream television . And that ’s why I ’m tickle to finally be able to share with you the climax of over two years of piece of work between the team at Gizmodo and BBC America : the unveiling of our first hour - long television special , “ Gizmodo : The Gadget Testers , ” on Monday , March 18th , 2013 at 10:20PM ET .
Why 10:20PM ? Because we ’ll be debuting the show right after the season finale of Top Gear on BBC America , which runs longer than your typical American program . That slot ’s no conjunction . When we first started working on this show internally with our output partners at True Entertainment , the shorthand pitch almost always come back to a single character : “ Top Gear for gismo . ” Anyone who has expend enough fourth dimension in a bar with me speak about hope and dreams has likely hear me wrawl on about Top Gear . “ If I could have one job , ” I ’d slur , “ it ’d be to host Top Gear . ” To be one of the legion of a show that will run next to Top Gear is as penny-pinching as I ’m ever exit to get to convey my dream job — and it ’s far close than I ever expected I ’d be . I ’m very thankful that BBC America — our first choice for a partner meshwork — instantly saw how our ideas could mesh with their existing show like Top Gear and new endeavors like Nerdist .
Now if you ’re read this , I ’m sure you ’re going to notice a few thing about this show . For one , the gadgets we ’re essay are a few months out of date . That ’s because we shot most of the it before CES . If we were to make more of these — a television series , let ’s say — turning production around quicker would of path be a priority .

To be utterly candid , there are definitely things we ’d desire to tweak if we are able to go to serial publication , like work with technology company to gain access to their latest - and - greatest cameras with which to shoot the show — then doing a David Attenborough - manner section at the end of episodes showing how we got our most ridiculous shot . I ’d like more explosions . I would wish to have more opportunity for my co - hosts to be injured , since I was the only one that break apart my [ frame ] this time around . And while BBC America is going to call this show a “ special , ” I do n’t suppose it ’s a big secret that it ’s hold up to run as a pilot program : if enough of you actually ascertain the show on the 18th , we ’ll get a hazard to make more of them . ( And if that is a big secret , BBC America , you have intercourse where I live , so you may add up yell at me if you like ! Especially if you then severalize me we can make a video series about examination contraption . )
Working on a Gizmodo TV show has blend from strange to surreal to back to just another gig to ( now ) kind of surreal again . I certainly would n’t have opine we ’d get this chance when I was a fat , overbold - ass small blogger sitting in my apartment a tenner ago stuffing my face with loud Chinese solid food and trying to calculate out how to explicate to reader what an MP3 was without making a dick joke . ( Still essay . ) And if this is as far as we get , so be it . I ’ve had a hell of a good time in my many tours with Gizmodo , and I ’ve been honored to lick alongside so many enceinte talents , many of whom are among the leading lights in engineering science writing today . We have n’t nailed it every time . ( I still owe Gray Powell a personal apologia for the direction things went down during the iPhone 4 scoop . ) But we ’ve attempt to keep Gizmodo from becoming the type of issue we were rallying against ten years ago — the sort of publishing that said there was n’t something unknown about being passionate about engineering — and I think that for all our fault , there ’s still no tech site out there quite like Gizmodo .
And I know there ’s no boob tube show out there like Gizmodo : The Gadget Testers . So if you desire to facilitate us get a hazard at making the television system show about gadgets that I intend we ’re all ready for — the best one … in the world — line in Monday , March 18th at 10:20PM ET and cheer us on .
