A feeding program for manatees is deepen in Florida as preservation chemical group seek to save the nautical mammal in the face of a devastating departure in local seagrass , the animal ’ favorite food for thought .

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission also launched alarge rescue operationthis week to help a number of distressed manatees reported across the land . Manatees are currently experiencing anunusual fatality rate event , most probably due to a lack ofseagrass . manatee typically crop on seagrass in the Indian River Lagoon , an estuary just north of Cape Canaveral on Florida ’s east coast .

A commissionreleasenoted that algal bloom in the laguna in recent class killed off seagrass , causing manatees to starve . There are nearly 50,000 fewer Acre of seagrass today than in 2009,according to the Guardian , meaning that the 7,500 - odd sea cow in the state have precious little of their main food germ .

To prevent starvation , conservation groups regularly distribute bread ( mostly romaine ) as a pedestal - in for seagrass . In a press conference Wednesday , official announce that they would increase the amount of romaine to about 20,000 pounds per week , CNN reported .

“ At this power point in time , we have been successful . Trichechus manatus are wipe out the romaine lettuce , ” state Ron Mezich , who knead in the Imperiled Species Management Section of the Florida - based commission , during the news conference . “ We are exposing turgid amount of animals to this food for thought source and we are making a deviation . ”

The first half of 2021 alone saw841 manatees die , and a year later it seems the alarming design has continued . In 2022 so far there have been over 300 Trichechus manatus deaths , grant tocommission information ; this calendar month , a teammanaged to savesix of the animals . Animals that are too frail to make out in the wild ( due to injury , starving , or some other cause ) are brought to fish tank to be rehabilitate and later released .

The Trichechus manatus eating program wasannounced last yearbut now is expected to continue through March , Mezich said . But feed one thousand of manatees lettuce is n’t a long - term plan for the universe ’s recovery .

“ In the bigger characterisation , this decision is very telling and a strong indication that the coastal ecosystem is no longer capable to corroborate manatees , particularly during difficult wintertime calendar month , ” tell Jill Richardson , a marine life scientist at the University of Miami , in auniversity releaseabout the current crisis . “ I go for it is a waken - up call for all Florida house physician and one that promotes pregnant change . ”

The manatee was reclassify from an peril species to a threatened onein 2017 , a recording label with few legal protections . Unless piss tone improves in the Trichechus manatus ’ habitats , their   troubles will hang on .
