Every year , the LGBTQ+ protagonism group GLAAD recognizes and awarding a choice of television set shows , picture show , and Word that boast powerful portraiture of rummy people . This year , a number of Marvel ’s comic strip were recognized for the contributions they ’ve made to queer culture , but those nominations were bittersweet for one incredibly disappointing reason : They’ve all been strike down .
America ( from Gabby Rivera and Joe Quinones ) , Black Panther : World of Wakanda ( Roxane Gay , Ta - Nehisi Coates , Yona Harvey , Alitha E. Martinez , and Afua Richardson ) , and Iceman ( Sina Grace , Alessandro Vitti , and Robert Gill ) have each been nominated forGLAAD ’s 2018 Outstanding Comic Bookcategory , and with good reason . Over the course of their respective arc , each serial explored various parts of the poove experience in ways that , frankly , are new for comedian . Iceman ’s travail into Bobby Drake ’s coming out as a gay man later in life ; America ’s focused on what it ’s like to be a queer immigrant go to college for the first sentence ; and World of Wakanda delved into the complicated intimate lives of the Dora Milaje .
But all of these books of late met their ends , as so many new , progressivecomic books do these days . low-toned sales led to their cancellation just as an totally Modern consultation was certain to hear about the books , specifically because of their being nominated for GLAAD awards and other honor .
As has been the case withthese variety of cancellations in the past , it ’s not difficult to understand the why of Marvel ’s decision . The publishing house is , above all else , in the business of make money , and if sure comics do n’t sell , it makes sense to cut them . At the same time , though , it stings a piddling to see all of Marvel ’s comedian with queer lead up for award like this — and it makes you wonder what might have become of the series and their sale numbers if they ’d been given a chance to proceed after this sort of gamy - profile nomination .
