The soundtrack for Amazon’sLord of the Ringsprequel has affordedcomposer Bear McCrearya canvas as immense as Middle - earth to act with : Howard Shore - ish riff , unique orchestral pieces , and increasingly in season two , lots of Song dynasty work . We already know thelumbering pitcher’s mound - troll Damrodis getting his own heavy metallic element infused piece this season , and this week , McCreary weaved one of Tolkien ’s own poems into a beautiful birdcall towelcome Tom Bombadil to the show . But the composer has a much more obscure , and much more intriguing ditty from the enfranchisement ’s adaptive past he wants to make a nod to .

That song ? “ Where There ’s a Whip , There ’s a manner ” fromthe Rankin Bass adaptationofReturn of the King .   “ I ’m looking . I ’m look for the moment , ” McCreary said in a recentInstagram live chatof his desire to bring the Sung toRings of Power(via / Film ) . “ It has n’t happened yet but I would have sex to make that happen . ”

In the 1980 follow - up to the studio ’s version ofThe Hobbit , “ Where There ’s a party whip , There ’s a Way ” act when Sam and Frodo sneak their way into Mordor in disguise , running into Sauron ’s army as they butt on towards the Black Gate to confront Aragorn ’s marshaled forces from Gondor and Rohan . As they encounter the orcs , they sing a song lamenting their own plight : that they ’re forced to fight whether they desire to or not by their whipmaster and Sauron . Sam and Frodo , mistaken for recreant , get whipped up into the marching too , forcing them to incur a way to sneak off and keep on to Mount Doom .

It ’s a peculiar Sung dynasty and it would be a very interesting one for McCreary to try and contain intoRings of Power , but considering the humans just gave a giant trolling an orchestral metal anthem , it ’s not really out of his pilothouse to seek to do so . But whatisinteresting is that , even in this brief vocal from a nearly 50 - year - old adaptation , it touch on somethingRings of Poweris also playing with in burst and starts : treating the Orcs not as a unmindful mass of beasts unyielding in their service to evilness , but an actual people with their own sense of federal agency — one that is beingdenied by Sauron ’s villainy .

Throughthe frame of AdarinRings of Power — one of the first corrupted by Morgoth into the Orcish raceway , and now the drawing card of what he sees as his “ children , ” seeking their own land — we’ve already begun to see coup d’oeil of the show humanizing the Orcs as society , even while still treating them as the primary scourge right now besides Sauron ’s machinations with Celebrimbor . Much controversy has been made of the depiction of seeing an Orc couple with a child in thesecond season ’s three - part premiere , even if that form of depiction aligns with Tolkein ’s own writing about Orc lodge , and his eventual reflection later in biography to treat them as a species with nicety and deepness beyond being purely , inherently evil . Given that Adar ’s plight is as much about liberating the Orcs from Sauron ’s dominion as much as it is go to war with the other mortal race of center - worldly concern , a song like “ Where There ’s a party whip , There ’s a Way ” could well match into McCreary ’s soundtrack plans going forward — and offer another challenging linkup toLord of the Rings ‘ adaptative history along the manner .
