The Last Ship , the Michael Bay - produce show about the disease that wipes out most of humanity , and the one Navy vessel that can save us , premieres Sunday on TNT . The pilot was touted as the biggest TNT has ever done , but can the show sustain that level of action for the rest of the season ? We call the curing to find oneself out .
Spoilers beforehand …
We visit the set of The Last Ship back in February , where we were treated to a set up tour and press Q&A ’s with executive producers Hank Steinberg and Steve Kane , star Eric Dane , and co - star Rhona Mitra . Here ’s everything we rule out about this intense , over - the - top action show .

The Last Ship follows a U.S. US Navy ship , the U.S.S. Nathan James , which returns from a delegation in the Arctic to encounter that 80 % of the earth ’s population has died in an epidemic . Complicating things is the discovery that the ship ’s delegacy to the Arctic was in reality a cover for Dr. Rachel Scott ’s research into the disease . She thinks she has what she needs to modernize a therapeutic , and , as the ship is one of the only secure topographic point left , the crew embarks on a mission to survive and get Dr. Scott what she needs .
The show is based on a book of account by William Brinkley , although executive producer Hank Steinberg and Steve Kane tell us that they ’ve departed “ quite a moment ” from that novel . The novel concentrate on the consequence of a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union and the devastation in the show is viral in nature .
Part of the reason for the modification was that the show wanted to move with the clip . The Cold War is out , disease outbreaks are in . The executive producer said that the awe of viruses has to do with survive in age where everyone ’s on top of each other and the intelligence is fill with disease story like HN1N1 , Swine Flu , and SARS .

Star Rhona Mitra , who play Dr. Scott , really believes that disease is a fear that a innovative interview can tie in to on its own , without having to be made into an allegory . When we spoke to her , she said :
The topic of this show in 2014 versus 2004 or even ten years before that is a very dissimilar realism . And I intend we ’re all aware of [ the idea ] , give our world and how quickly epidemics and bacterias and various viruses are talking over at a level where we do n’t have the ability or antibiotic to take charge of it . And its common cognition . . . this is a real possibility . We can connect ourselves to this world without it being some variety of surreal blob - thing .
Eric Dane also tell that he does n’t believe of this as a post - apocalyptic show , since the centering is on stop over the disease , not just dealing with the aftermath :

I do n’t recollect this is the end of the earth . We ’re not surviving , we ’re preserving . End of the world , with a lot shows that are on tv now and in the past times they ’re all about selection . … This show is about preserving civilisation , maintain the range of dictation , preserve life , preserving and securing a future tense .
The buffer does precisely what you ’d expect it to do : It sets up the premise and the conflicts to come . There ’s Dr. Scott looking for the “ primordial origin ” of the disease in the Arctic , but not tell Eric Dane ’s Captain Tom Chandler what she ’s up to . Then , there are a number of messages the maitre d’hotel pay off when the ship return : the results of the outbreak , that they only desire is Dr. Scott ’s enquiry , and that his family is in hiding somewhere .
And they did n’t just go all out on the pilot . The 2nd installment has the work party searching for supply at Guantanamo Bay in what we ’ve been promised is “ a lot of action and it feels as sport and as exciting as the pilot burner . ” But , like every one of these appearance , there are go to have to be smaller plot . If only for budgetary reasons . The pilot inaugurate a quixotic subplot between two crewmen and the interrogative sentence of Captain Chandler ’s family . Said executive manufacturer Hank Steinberg :

As we get rich and deeper into the show and we learn more about the characters there will also be more small-scale character episodes that congratulate the bigger , more action - drive episodes .
The other episode that everyone kept let the cat out of the bag about was a journeying to Nicaragua to rule monkeys to examine a vaccine on . ( They would n’t say , but I ’m guessing it does n’t run out . It ’s sound to be early in the season , and I ca n’t imagine they find a vaccinum that soon . ) There ’s a enormously external aspect to the show : there are Russians , British mass , and some crucial Norse characters . There are trips all over the earth , with the promise that a second season would travel even more .
Part of the secret of the disease regard who alter it and why , which will drive a lot of the show ’s mythology .

One of the tropes the fender hit hard is definitive “ drive , rogue scientist ” vs. the follow - orders military . But , according to Eric Dane , that conflict is mostly resolved :
Initially the conflict comes from her withholding info from us when we were up in the Arctic , she sleep with what was going on and did n’t tell us . And once we get past that , it becomes about what ’s the good way to go about vote out this virus and everybody ’s get a dissimilar idea . But I ’m the sea captain . So that conflict gets resolved moderately rapidly .
What lasts much longer are the divergence between the chieftain and his XO ( Adam Baldwin ) . That ’s something that comes up only at the destruction of the pilot , when Captain Chandler and XO Mike Slattery have a private dissonance about Chandler ’s determination to go after Dr. Scott ’s research . Look for lots of one - on - one scenes between Baldwin and Dane , since the writer were told by their Navy advisor that there ’d never be argumentation between the two in front of the crew .

The other conflict , which will come to a nous around installment four or five , is that , with the world in disarray , there actually is n’t a government anymore . So there ’s nothing legally bandage the bunch to their mission or their chain of command . There are go bad to be mass who want to leave the ship and abandon the mission . It ’s a personal problem for Chandler , too , said Dane :
In jolly much every where I ’m piss a decision for our gang or figuring what course we ’re go to take , whether it be when we ’re extend to Guantanamo Bay to refuel and find food and supply for my bunch or going to Nicauragua to gets some monkeys so that we can test vaccines on live animals , every determination I make there ’s in the back of my headspring : my family ’s out there somewhere and there ’s a little constituent of that that ’s sort of patina - ed over every single option I make as this character .
The fact that this show take plaza on a U.S. Navy ship plays a huge role in every part of the making of this show . As can be expected from a show that has Michael Bay as an executive manufacturer , the show has a good kinship with the military . There ’s always at least 2 - 3 naval advisor on place during cinematography .

Of of course , since it ’s called The Last Ship , the ship is really important . The curing are diversion of the actual ship the pilot was filmed on , with just a few thing expatiate for the benefit of the larger member of the cast . ( patently , filming on the real ships was a morsel claustrophobic . ) The fend sets include the gamy - technical school bridge and the make - shift lab built for Dr. Scott in the chopper Laurus nobilis .
When we were on set , the lab had most of its equipment propel out in party favour of what looked like a bunch of infirmary beds . Maybe the ship does n’t remain so innocent of the disease after all .
For exteriors , the show uses genuine USN ships . Not only those in sour grass , but they also film out at sea on them . Of naturally , they ’re hold to Navy ’s schedule for that . For object lesson , we were tell they had to wholly re - do their cinematography schedule when the political science shut - down think they could n’t take on radix .

The executive producer were very attached to ensure the show was “ ground ” in reality , but not beholden to it . They predict it “ super - extreme reality , but based in fact . ”
In Dr. Scott , we get the authoritative action - scientist . The rapscallion that other scientist express mirth out of a room , but is always right . Mitra key her theatrical role using similar clichés :
In the past , in Rachel Scott ’s work she take the back alley and fetch sinful results . She rifle against the grain and is a piece of a wild card but has had unbelievable successes in the past times . So when its her idea to find the aboriginal stress of this computer virus in the gumshoe the government sanctions it .

Again , this is a Michael Bay product , so of line there ’s going to be big action and big explosion . In fact , Bay directed the Arctic set piece at the showtime of the archetype . And , as the show proceed on , there ’s go to be a portion of scenes of small teams leaving the ship to get supplies / monkeys . We were much guaranteed that every meter this happen , the mission would end in trouble . So expect a peck of cuts to from the soil team doing tightlipped - quarters battle to the ship provide long - length support .
And that ’s the scoop from the determined sojourn . We ’ll be recapping the show , get down with this Sunday ’s premier .
