Many call the “ rule of third ” the perfect agency to pen an effigy . You may disagree , but these 108 photos from this week’sShooting Challengewon’t be called faulty without a combat .
Shooting Challenge : harness the third
Winner – Rows
The clean lines of rowing is why I chose it as my subject for the Rule of Thirds Challenge . This exposure was taken from Christ Church hayfield at the University of Oxford in England . I envisioned stimulate strong horizontal line , which are the boat and the shadow line . More subtly , what I consider to be the focal compass point of the ikon ( though others may disaccord ) is the left over - most athlete in the glare of the reflection , which is localize on the left - most perpendicular third line . Despite having used guidebook line in Photoshop to perfectly set the personal credit line when cropping , the photo does not expect as text edition as I await , but it was more visually likable to me than some other more obvious crops and exposure that I taste using The Rule . Katie and Hailey
On a Tuesday Nox , Katie found out the grim news that her baby ( who ’s hubby was heading over to Afghanistan ) was moving herself and her two - year - old daughter , Hailey , out of state . Two years ago , Katie ’s babe find herself pregnant at 18 . As the oldest of the family by 12 geezerhood , Katie stepped up to help her sister care for the beautiful flaxen - hairy minor . Having no children of her own , Katie flourish as Hailey ’s aunty . Katie , a lensman herself , not only spend clock time helping her sister lift Hailey , she find a muse in the little girl and spent hours photograph her angelic brass . When Katie get out Hailey and her sister were moving out of state of matter , she knew she need someone to catch their special attachment and that is when I receive the panicked earpiece call asking for my help . The two would be leaving on that Friday and there was no prison term to do in . I think work Hailey to the train museum would keep her occupy as well as be an appropriate backcloth . So , with my antique grip in towage , I met the two blonde beauties for their final exposure shoot . regrettably , it was a cold and tedious day and there was no time to reschedule . Not knowing if it was the weather or the intuition of my young fashion model feeling the gloominess in her aunt , Hailey ( who can usually light up a room with her grin ) could not be coaxed into a grin . When Hailey lastly fell apart , Katie go to console her as I snapped this picture . According to Katie , there were no parole to trace how she felt when she regard this image — she was overcome with emotion . As you’re able to see , the 1/3 rule helps the viewer to be drawn to the “ Mother and kid ” . Nikon D300S,70 - 200 f/2.8 , ISO 400 , 1/250 sec , photo taken at the Wantaugh Railroad Museum in Wantaugh , NY .

Lifeguard Tower
Once I study this shot Challenge , I know incisively where I want to head out for the snapshot . I ’ve capture a shot similar to this one , but I sleep with the color in this one even more than the last prison term . The Rule of thirds is one of my favorite , and i often find myself shooting in this manner . I traveled to Santa Monica and walked the beach searching for the perfect guard tower . I had about 20 bit of sun when I come across my chosen tower , about a mile south of the pier , which stood atop a little hill . I used the apparent horizon as a reference book for the lateral , and figure a marrow point from the tower for the horizontal . I did n’t throw down any stick , and just eye’d this one . I did n’t do any post on this , either . film with a Canon Rebel EOS DSLR on 58 millimetre genus Lens

Take Off
I am a new D5100 owner and am already loving it . Giz was a peachy help in making my first real SLR commitments . Many thanks . For this shot I drove to my local international drome and DID NOT * cough*cough * hop ANY fences or barbed telegram to get near sound out airport ’s runway for a clear line of products of sight .
The photo is out of focal point . A friend of mine had borrowed the camera only the twenty-four hours before and had reassigned my AE - L / AE - F Florida key and never bothered to evidence me . Hearing the AF motor spool with no lock upon half shutter caused me to forthwith reverence the worst . So , rather than miss the moment and break to trouble-shoot I switch over to manual direction and took the shot with a frantic hand caress the focal point mob . It was not until later that I mark all of the changed mise en scene . Noob wrongdoing .
All in all I had a courteous good afternoon , capturing airplanes and not the tending of airport security . Camera : Nikon D5100 , Nikkor 55 - 200 VR , 1/1000 s , f/5.6 , ISO 400

Cold Crop
The following shot middling much follows the specific regulation and benefits a act from some heat shimmer / cooling on a truly frigid day . Varied the harvest to test the rule , many times – but the diminished white windowpane only had some narrative value when the rule was use . Canon 5D Mark II – F22 , 400 mm zoom and a tad too high ISO 800 😉

Composed From a Moving Car
I corrupt a DLSR 3 calendar week ago and was all open fire up to see what its capable of . On a lazy dark when there were no patients in ER , I was shop some tips and tricks on photography . That ’s when a buddy of mine suggested to stop out gizmodo.com for shooting challenge . Could n’t seek the macro challenge as I had no macro crystalline lens . turn out I did n’t need one . So set to take part in the current challenge me and my lady friend manoeuvre riverside in a car . We stopped at the signal and that ’s when I interpret this authorship . Before I could even start the crystalline lens covering we depart moving . Refusing to give up , I turned the on camera and Defense Intelligence Agency tick it . Yes , out of a propel car ! Few experiments in Photoshop and I was glad . Canon 60D with18 - 135 mm . ISO 320 , f/5.6 , 1/800 sec .

Lifeguard Tower II
I was repel by the beach having hassle think of a tasteful Thirds shot when I picture how flat the ocean was and the lifeguard tower . I had been stand for to take an interesting slam of that particular panorama and think it would be cool to get out a little sea for the heart to catch as a bottom and focus on the tall leftover - helping hand tugboat . Taken on an iPhone 4 ( HDR ) , HDR merged in Pro HDR and direct contrast / brightness edit , blue-pencil for brightness in Camera+

No Skateboarding
I used Nikon D3000 to take this photo . I had my 18 - 55 mm lens with me and the iso was set at 1600 . I took the word-painting at Washington square park in NY .

Campanile
Walking to my dorm in the evening , I transcend Berkeley ’s beloved Campanile and point out the wondrous chromaticity it took on as the sunlight was setting . The weather condition was consummate , and I could n’t have expect a better sidetrack ! Iso 64 4.3 mm f/2.8 iPhone 4S television camera

Padre Island
While my girlfriend and I were blunder around with short painting on a camping trip at Padre Island National Seashore we were awestruck as an orange tree glow Sun Myung Moon began to seem over the visible horizon to the Orient . The image was take with a Canon T2i , Canon EF 16 - 35 mm f/2.8L II . With the focal duration at 23 , and using the lively finder and digital zoom to pore the stars , ISO 800 and a 6 2nd exposure yield this image . ISO 800 greatly decoct the noise from ISO 1600 , and a 6 second photograph leave a nice effect on the water where is is smoothed but you’re able to also still make out waves .

For as authoritative as the “ regulation ” of thirds may fathom , I do suppose it ’s best used more as a general guide than a way of life — a means to capture a unfailing apparent horizon , or redact a subject when nothing else is working quite in good order .

Though I will say , while lot of the photograph in the galleries below were excellent shots , I ’d argue they ’d be even secure if they succeed the rule a bit more literally . Actually , I think Padre Island , right away above , is a perfect exercise of this mind . The horizon follows the rule somewhat close , but the moon does not . It ’s a beautiful and unique photo , but I ca n’t help but wish the igniter was poke at to the right , just a shade , to be a sodding third … or … hmm … maybe not … the more I attend at it , the less I desire anything about it to change .
